We are pleased to announce that Hasekura Summit will be held at Tohoku University as part of the 115th anniversary of its founding, as well as in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Faculty of Law and Letters in 2022. At the Summit, Tohoku University President Hideo Ohno and the heads of the faculties/schools/center related to the humanities and social sciences invite the heads of the member universities of the Hasekura League, a worldwide research association of humanities and social sciences, to join us as co-signatories in presenting the Hasekura Statement. This pact will proclaim a commitment to the objectives of maintaining and enhancing the significance of the humanities and social sciences and a focus upon international interdisciplinary collaboration dedicated to solving the myriad of problems facing 21st-century societies.

These events will also provide a forum for the discussion of the future prospects of young students with access to more fruitful academic exchange. With great excitement, we look with forward to the participation of university and high school students with an orientation toward the humanities and social sciences who have perspectives informed by international curiosity and awareness.

The Hasekura League

The Hasekura League is an international interdisciplinary Japanese Studies network, established between Tohoku University and a host of affiliated research universities renowned for the humanities and social sciences.

The name is derived from the Sendai feudal retainer, Hasekura Tsunenaga, a name which is considered synonymous with a progressive character. At the behest of Date Masamune, Lord of Sendai, he traveled to Europe on a diplomatic mission to the continent. His politeness and insight were, by all accounts, well-received in Europe.

The League, which currently includes 25 universities mainly in Europe and North America, aims to expand its membership to others in Asia, Africa, and Central and South America.
